Landscaping for Security

Strategic landscaping, such as planting prickly bushes under windows and keeping bushes too short to provide cover for a burglar can be a very effective tool in protecting your home. Any plant that is placed below a window should be kept short and not allowed to grow past the windowsill. Trees should be trimmed so lower branches are a minimum of seven feet above ground. An uncut lawn may suggest to a potential burglar that you are traveling and put your home at risk.

Another easy tip is to use gravel as a ground cover under windows so you would be warned anyone approaches from outside. However, do not place large rocks near glass windows or doors giving burglars an instant opportunity. Thorny bushes planted next to your fence and under your windows can be another deterrent to potential burglars. Rose bushes are an attractive and effective choice.
